Dr. Jackie Salazar

(She, Her/s)

Dr. Jackie Salazar is a bicultural (French/Mexican) Chicago south side native. She grew up in various south side communities, attended Chicago Public schools, and eventually dropped out her junior year due to feeling a lack of belonging within the school community. Additionally, she is a complex trauma survivor and was raised by caregivers who struggled with mental health and substance use difficulties. All of these early experiences helped cultivate a passion for family, social justice, and community engagement as she recognized that no one lives in isolation; all of these systems (e.g., school, family, community) are constantly interacting and shaping who we are. The three things that helped her overcome barriers were her biological and chosen family, friends, and southside communities. Thus, she co-established Chicago Wellness Center for Families in hopes that others can find and create a sense of belonging within their relationships and communities too.

Dr. Salazar is a licensed therapist that specializes in trauma, stress, depression, mood/behavior difficulties, and substance use, as well as training and supervision of clinical trainees. She sees families, young adults (ages 18-26), and children as young as two for both therapy and evaluations. Dr. Salazar utilizes a collaborative and relational approach to examine how early experiences and messages shape the way we view ourselves and others that lead to symptoms, stress, biases, and barriers. With children, she utilizes art and play based therapy modalities, skills training, and works closely with parents providing training, education, and support.
